We built our program and module topics for our workshops utilizing previous research in this field, exploring successful policies and compiling recurring themes. Our workshops follow the "Teach the Coach" model, with the hope of educating all members in sport organizations on sexualized violence prevention. It is our hope that Sexual Violence Education will be included as part of mandatory training for coaches and all members in leadership positions.

OUR MOTIVATION

Our motivation behind this idea grew from our university academic and athletic experiences. Being a part of StFX Athletics, specifically the

X-Women Hockey Team, we have embraced the positive lessons and skills acquired through sport. We have developed a strong understanding regarding the role sport plays in our society and how sport has the capacity to be a positive platform and avenue for change. However, it is important to acknowledge that sport is also a place where violence can manifest in various ways. Coaches and sport administrators are in positions of power which, if abused, can lead to less positive outcomes.

During the 2019-2020 academic year, we were both invited to represent  the X-Women hockey team to serve on a committee of student athletes called, “X-Out Sexual Violence”. This initiative inspired us to become facilitators and lead workshops for fellow teammates. Through our experience and involvement in sport, we have been inspired to further educate ourselves on this subject with hopes of positively impacting sport associations across Canada.

CONSULTING

Our key research findings and data were shared and communicated with various key stakeholders including those who work in sexual violence prevention, sexual education and health professors, human kinetics professors, sexual violence response advocates at various universities, student-athletes, and of course minor sport and university coaches.  Sport organizations including Sport Nova Scotia, Hockey Eastern Ontario, and The Ontario Coaching Association were also involved in the process. Conducting interviews with various stakeholders allowed us to take our findings from sport policies and gain input from policy creators who are consistently working on and prioritizing sexual violence prevention. We ultimately strived to gain a better understanding of the role sport can play in preventing sexualized violence, which can also lead to finding a solution to reduce sexual violence in our society.

 WALLACE FAMILY INTERNSHIP

The StFX Extension Innovation and Enterprise Centre administers the Wallace Family Entrepreneurship Fund. Students who have an enterprise idea and who are interested in starting a new venture, developing a new prototype, or applying innovative approaches to a service can apply for a summer internship. As interns, students receive coaching and assistance from StFX staff and faculty mentors while engaging in learning activities that help explore and develop an enterprise venture. With help from the Wallace Family Internship, our research project allowed us to utilize our drive and ambition by designing workshop modules on educating members in leadership positions within the sporting community regarding the prevention of sexual violence. We believe that the knowledge and education we have gained through our sport and volunteer efforts has better prepared us to train and lead others on sexual violence subtopics that will meaningfully resonate within communities. With the support of the Wallace Family Summer Internship, our goal is to make Saint Francis Xavier University, greater Nova Scotia and sports communities across the nation a safer, healthier, and more positive space for all individuals.
